TIM VYNER
In
June 2006 Tim Vyner travelled to Ghana to follow the ‘Black Stars’ progress
through the World Cup.
“I
arrived with a bag of Puma footballs and my watercolours and recorded the
atmosphere and build up around the games. I watched England play Paraguay in an
open-air cinema and I celebrated on the streets of Accra, as Ghana became the
only African nation to qualify for the knockout stages to earn a game against
Brazil.
The
whole nation loves football. Everywhere people gathered around televisions to
watch all the games, and on every bare patch of ground kids played out the best
goals.”
Having recorded England’s
progress through the last world cup in Japan and Korea, Vyner wanted to develop
his reportage story of the beautiful game. There are no stadiums or fan
festivals in this exhibition, but a celebration of football played out on the
streets of Ghana in a small corner of a continent that will host the world cup
for the first time in 2010.
Other
works on show include examples of Tim Vyner’s growing collection of football
imagery and street life. |
