From one of the coldest and longest winters in recent years Andrew Macara presents a series of captivating scenery from the Derbyshire landscape. This work embodies a lighter, more playful character to this bleakest of seasons. The shadows and light used throughout his paintings reflect a hopeful and an awe inspiring splendour from what is clearly a much loved subject matter. The snow thaws and ‘Cows and Calves, Belper Lane I & II’ return us to an enriched and contented countryside. Then, continuing the theme of his 2008 Curwen exhibition, ‘Reflections I’ and ‘Goldfish’ remind us of Andrew’s skill at capturing reflected light on water. In ‘Waterfall, Madeira’ a few simple brushstrokes manage to convey the movement and refreshing coolness of running water. This scene contrasts well with the heat and resplendant colour of India, as shown vividly in ‘Drying Cloths, Rajasthan’ and the busy scene of ‘Pushkar Ghats, India’. We then move on to bright beachscapes of Greece and Croatia before finally making it back to the lapping shores of England. A unifying theme of Andrew Macara’s work is his fascination with water, whether in the form of snow on the hills or reflections in a pool, women washing in India or children splashing in the waves at Clacton. This exhibition attempts to capture the wide variety of Andrew’s skill while taking you through some of the landscapes and scenes that have inspired him enough to want to capture them on canvas. - HW10 |
